Actually, this might be a good place to ask. I've heard of people talking about HAGAR, I am not sure what it is and what it is for. Can somebody please explain.

I am planning on getting my HPAC membership next spring, not concerned about ratings, just want insurance so that I can fly the mountain sites without getting into trouble.

Right now in the Calgary area you can write the Hagar at pretty much any
flying school. Springbank is probably the most hassle free. Give the flying
school a call and speak to an instructor. Many are not that familiar with the
Hagar but if you explain what it is they eventually get it. Takes about 2 days to
set up as they have to have Transport forward them the exam via computer.
Cost is about $80-$90 last I checked. Hope this helps.

A pilot flying in controlled airspace must write the HAGAR examination. This is a Transport Canada requirement and the law. It seems like a good idea to study it to gain knowledge of airspace regulations as there is a lot of controlled airspace in Alberta. I think that most people would be surprised to see haw much controlled airspace there actually is.

There is lot of dry information with regards to this topic at the following links:

Just reread my post. Just to be clear, when I said "most are not familiar with it" I was refering to the flying
school instructors not the paragliding or hanggliding pilots.

Right now I'm going through the book, "From The Ground Up" , which is a pretty good pilot's reference; it's cleared up a lot of questions I've had about general aviation. The HAGAR guide from HPAC is pretty decent too, if a little dated. I'll check out Springbank, thanks.

Yeah, I know... I had to get my ultralight pilot license in order to fly PPG's. Just checked transport canada's website and it appears that they offer no credit for a ultralight pilots license (or any pilots license) towards HAGAR. Guess I will have to get it done soon.

I don't know anything about an ultralight licence but transport gives full Hagar credit for anything
from a private pilots licence and up.

the ultra license is one step below the private license. Guess that means I am S.O.L.

You can't fly in controlled airspace.

So, this subject has veered off tack a bit and just to bring it back in line... I've contacted the Springbank flying club about taking the exam and they do do it, so at least now I know where to go to write this thing.
Next is gathering data on the exam:
-The HPAC reference is dated but I have downloaded the latest AIM and I have access to a recent edition of the CAR's.
-I have the book, "From The Ground Up" , which is an excellent flying reference.
-There does not seem to be much else around to help with studying this so I think I will make a program similar to the Amateur Radio multiple guess program that Industry Canada has available online. I used that and did pretty well on the Ham exam last week so, once the program is useable I'll make it available to others who are interested. Any input on this little project will be warmly received.

Hey Steve
Wish I could help but there is really not a lot out there for study material. Wondering though about your HAM study guide as I need to get mine too but am the least technical guy you will ever know...haha
the who, what ,when and where of that would be nice for everyone too.
Thanks for the motivation Steve
Cheers

Here is the bank of questions that the exam draws from: http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.ns ... 01900.html
The exam is 100 questions taken from this pool of 1100 questions.

And you can download the Amateur Radio Exam Generator for practice here: http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.ns ... 05378.html

The Exam Generator can print out exams with answer sheets. I think it was helpfull to do a few practice exams before hand just to get used to taking exams again and it pointed out areas I was weak in.

I also found the book, "Ham Radio Study Notes..." by Ron Kolody, to be quite useful. This book is kind of expensive but the ham radio store in town here (Calgary) has it in stock.

Industry Canada has an office on the 4th floor of a building downtown where you can write. They aren't too keen on giving the exams but it's their job. Call Andrew at 403-292-4204 to make an appointment. The alternative is to wait for the club to start another course which I think is in the fall.
